Teens Connecting Continents - Rwanda
The Change the World Kids are committed to helping teenagers in Rwanda to overcome the challenges of poverty, violence and disease by rebuilding a soccer facility and program and promoting education and hope in their rural communities
.
Our newest international effort is dedicated to helping kids our own age
in the Eastern Province of Rwanda to overcome challenges that face many kids
in Africa: poverty, education and disease. We call it "Teens Connecting
Continents - Rwanda," and we've launched the program in collaboration
with Partners in Health to support the rebuilding of a soccer stadium in Rwinkwavu
and the growth of a youth soccer program, and to support quality education
for these youth. Our dream has two parts: for this facility is for this new
facility to become a youth center for recreation and an empowerment facility
for health, and to enable these youth to attend excellent schools. This winter
and spring, we are holding a series of awareness activities to educate people
about the need to support and fight for basic human rights in East Africa,
such as access to clean water, food, sanitation, education and medicines to
combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and other diseases. Providing Rwandan
youth with a place of their own, a simple soccer field and basic equipment,
and education, can make a difference for their health and the health of their
community.

An Ark- A Gift Of Hope and Sustainability
Dedicated to Nancy Nye who worked to make the world a better place

The Change the World Kids, inspired the entire greater Woodstock community to make a gift of an "ark" to Heifer International, and we are dedicating this gift to Nancy Nye - and all other individuals working to make the world a better place. In the ark are pairs of animals, pairs of flocks, trios of smaller animals, and pairs of beehives to help families around the world meet their dreams - sufficient food and a source of dependable income. Since 1944 Heifer International has been using gifts to send young animals to struggling families throughout the world, as well as to train the families in the animals' care. These families give offspring of their animals to others in need in their community, so the gift continues to multiply.
In November, 2006, we undertook an effort to help reduce world hunger by
inspiring our greater community to raise the $5,000 necessary to contribute
an "ark" to Heifer International. This was big money, but would
provide pairs and trios of many animals to families throughout the world,
training in their care, and the promise that the first offspring of the pair
will be given to a neighbor in the village or town to start a new flock or
herd.
Hunger is serious. Our plan is based on the idea, "If you give a family
a fish, it eats for a day; if you teach a family to fish, it can feed itself
for years." We, however, are not a somber group, so sought something
other than a thermometer or ruler to let the community know how close we were
to our goal.
We cut an ark out of blue-board, made a secure stand, and prepared to pin
on a paper animal to represent each donation. We made stencils, which eventually
traveled to local elementary schools, traced, and cut out the animals. This
was surprisingly relaxing (ridiculous, we know), and became quite fun as we
got more and more creative with coloring the cutouts. Purple and yellow striped
llamas, pink cows, and polka dotted camels littered the tables. The copy store
employee laughed when we brought them in to laminate as protection against
the weather.
Contributions came from all over the greater Woodstock community: Killington,
Reading, Woodstock, Quechee, Bethel, Barnard, Sharon, South Strafford, Pomfret,
Bridgewater, Plymouth, visitors leaning about it while in town, and more.
The front of the ark was covered with animals, and dozens were on the back.
We made the goal in January, and the hope that these animals bring to children
across our world is the best gift for us.

Sharing the Holidays
The Change the World Kids provided Holiday Gifts to Families from The Haven and Listen.
Community members selected a heart that had a holiday wish from a child or family that needed some help this holiday season. Change The World Kids coordinated the effort and delivered the gifts to Families in December 2006.
